Successful Post–Fourth of July Cleanup = 2,190 items and 46lbs removed!
On July 5, COI welcomed 20 volunteers to Twin Lakes Beach for our annual post–Fourth of July cleanup. Together, they removed 2,190 pieces of litter weighing 46 pounds, helping prevent debris from reaching Monterey Bay and protecting local wildlife.
One of the most encouraging discoveries came before our cleanup even began. A dedicated local resident had already spent hours cleaning the beach during the night of July 4 and again early the following morning. Thanks to her efforts, the shoreline was much cleaner than expected—a wonderful reminder of the difference one person can make.
While the beach had received a head start, the surrounding streets, sidewalks, and parking areas told a different story. Holiday litter and other items, remained scattered throughout the neighborhood, where wind and storm drains can quickly carry debris into the ocean.
Cleanup Highlights:
🗑️ 2,190 litter items collected (46 lbs.)
🆕 71% Fresh Debris: Most litter had been recently discarded during 4th of July celebrations.
🍽️ Food-Related Waste Dominated: Food wrappers and paper products made up more than one-third of everything collected, reflecting the impact of holiday picnics and beach gatherings.
🚬 Cigarette Butts: Although still common, cigarette butts were less prevalent than food- and beverage-related litter.
💪Thank you to everyone who helped make this cleanup a success. Our community demonstrated that protecting the ocean begins long before litter reaches the shoreline. Every piece of debris removed is one less piece that can harm wildlife, break down into microplastics, or pollute Monterey Bay.
