Albany Beach Post-4th-of-July Weekend Cleanup
On Monday, July 8, the COI team returned to Albany Beach, situated outside the Berkeley/Oakland area. Our repeated surveys of this beach have always provided valuable learning experiences.
During this trip, five team members conducted our scientific plastic assessment survey while another team member worked outside the survey boundaries, collecting as much trash as possible.
Despite significant efforts from concerned citizens who had already removed most of the large debris, the beach still had a substantial amount of small plastic trash. Over the course of three hours, we collected a staggering 691 pieces of small plastic debris. Although the total weight of our collected trash was only one pound, it's a stark reminder that every piece of plastic, no matter how small, counts.
We also had the pleasure of meeting several beachgoers who were inspired by our efforts and eager to connect us with others interested in contributing to our cause. These interactions made our day even more rewarding, reinforcing the importance of community engagement in our mission.
Every piece of trash we collect brings us one step closer to a cleaner environment, and we're grateful for the support and enthusiasm of the local community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day a success!
