International Coastal Cleanup Day: Moran Lake Beach
On Saturday, September 20th, Clean Oceans International joined volunteers for International Coastal Cleanup Day at Moran Lake Beach in Santa Cruz. Representing COI were EPAP Coordinator Patti Clark, new Social Media & Outreach Intern Emily Ramirez, and Education Director David Schwartz.
We teamed up with site lead Pacific Paw to clean both the beach and nearby neighborhood.
The Top items were: 235 cigarette butts, 67 food wrappers, 14 cans, 9 pieces of foam packaging, & 7 toys
As part of this collective effort, the COI team contributed:
279 items | 21 lbs, including 156 cigarette butts and 29 food wrappers. These numbers highlight just how much everyday waste continues to impact our coastlines.
Across Monterey Bay, preliminary reports show > 4,500 pounds of trash were removed during this year’s Coastal Cleanup. Final tallies are still being compiled by the event organizers, and we’ll share updates as soon as they are released.
International Coastal Cleanup Day is about more than the numbers: it’s about neighbors and partners working side by side, connecting with millions worldwide, and taking meaningful action for trash-free seas.
By the Numbers: Volunteers: 11 | Trash Kept out of the Ocean: 61.5 lbs and 554 pieces!
