South Beach State Park collaboration with Rising Appalachia, Oregon – August 2016
Clean Oceans International traveled up to South Beach State Park in Newport, OR, where we met with band members from Rising Appalachia to lead a community beach cleanup. The popular music group was playing at the “Beloved” music festival nearby and many of the volunteers were festival goers themselves. In addition, an Oregon State Park Ranger attended the cleanup and gave the volunteer group a robust local history and background of the plastic pollution issue plaguing this section of the Oregon Coast.
Different than what is seen on much of California’s Coasts, in Oregon there was a plenitude of pelagic microplastics and small fragments of plastic that had been in the Ocean and environment for years or decades. With fantastic weather, the COI team, volunteers, and Rising Appalachia had a great day on the beach cleaning one small part of the Oregon Coast! We finished the day singing a few songs with Rising Appalachia, which made it exponentially more special. We are grateful for Rising Appalachia and Oregon State Parks for their dedication to helping the marine plastic issue and making this cleanup event possible!
